Volunteer Vietnam | Hoi An
Hoi An is one of the most attractive cities in Vietnam and the old city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A major harbor and trading city in the 16th and 17th centruies it has kept the old city quite untouched.
The town is a special example of a traditional trading port in South-East Asia which has been completely preserved: it is the only town in Viet Nam that has survived intact in this way. Most of the buildings are in the traditional architectural style of the 19th and 20th centuries. They are aligned along narrow lanes of traditional type. They include many religious buildings, such as pagodas, temples, meeting houses, etc., which relate to the development of a port community. The traditional lifestyle, religion, customs and cooking have been preserved and many festivals still take place annually.
Three km outside of the city there is a long beach. The town is small and handy, though a much visited tourist site, still preserves an original feeling of small town.
We are teaching en evening classes in a community development program. The program is located in the center of the city. On week days we teach in the evenings and during week-ends we can also teach in the mormings and afternoons.
We also have the possibility to teach computers during week ends.
This can be combined with working in the orphanage.

Travel to Teach offers home stay or stay in the outskirts of the small town, five minutes from the city center and the working places.
The houses are western standard and the families are middle class Vietnamese families. This is a small tranquil community, very green and overlooking rice fields, yet 5 minutes biking distans to Hoi An city center.

Hoi An has a perfect infrastructure for tourism. There are a number of trips to take, such as:
The marble Mountains, 9 km short of Da Nang, are well worth a morning or afternoon trip from Hoi An.
Da Lat- originally the playground of the French, who built villas in the clear mountain air to escape the heat and humidity of the coast.

There is a number of small restaurants and since Hoi An is a tourist hub in central Vitenam there is also a number of western restaurants available.
The home stays can also privode breakfast and lunch or dinnr at an extra cost.
The hot season starts in June and the montths of June July and August are very hot. The months of October, November can be very rainy and sometime the town has been flooded. Best months to come are December till April. But the beaches offer relief all year around!

One of the conditions of entry onto our programs is that volunteers have travel insurance. Most importantly the insurance needs to include medical treatment and repatriation in case of unforeseen accidents or illnesses. Volunteers should purchase insurance independently and bring a copy of their insurance certificate with them for their local co-ordinator to check before starting their program. Read our terms and conditions.
