Chiang Mai is not just the place to be for any backpacker while travelling through Thailand, it is definitely a really good place to start working as a volunteer as well. The dorm in Chiang Mai is located in a nice friendly neighborhood. With its two floors, a cozy living room and a small outside area for nice get-togethers the dorm is a charming place to be. Jim is the coordinator in Chiang Mai. She is Thai and just great in giving new volunteers a good start in Thailand. She speaks very good English, introduces you to the Thai culture and shows you the nicest bars if you want.
For everyone who wants to keep in touch with family and friends at home, the family owned internet place next door is the cheapest option. You can even get the best lunch for just 20 Bath within a few minutes from the dorm, offered by a nice Thai woman. There are restaurants that offer really good western food as well, if you miss home. You can even get real Italian food close by. Let’s just say that you have the best assortment of restaurants when you should decide to come to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai is also known for its great bars & coffee places. You never get bored because there is just so much to do. You can sign up for Yoga classes, get a massage or just go to the gym. You can go shopping in the mall, go to the Night Market, or the Night Bazaar, and on the weekends to the Sunday Market. You can even use the hotel pool to go swimming on really hot days, for just 100 Bath. You can also check out all the wonderful temples in and around Chiang Mai.
If you are interested in adventure, just book a day trip that includes waterfalls, elephant riding, river rafting, long neck or Akha Village, and trekking. You will have so much fun. Or just play paintball, or go bungee jumping. So if you are interested in a bigger city, with a lot of things to do and if you want to support schools that are under average standards and need help, then is Chiang Mai just the right place to be. I had an awesome time!
