Volunteer Tanzania | ArushaWe are no longer sending volunteers to this location. Instead we will be concentrating on our Asia and Central America projects. For more information about these please take a look at our Asia and Central America project pages.

Based in the foothills of the majestic Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru, the Arusha volunteer project specialises in sports and community development for the under-privaliged youth of Northern Tanzania.
Anyone with a love of life, adventure, and with a kind, helpful and empathetic nature is highly welcomed on board! Whether you are interested in sports coaching, teaching, lending a hand to a local orphanage, getting creative with local arts and crafts or simply being a friend to Arusha’s underprivileged and helping them to set up micro-finance projects, we will welcome you with open arms and a wide smile!
It is not mandatory to hold teaching or sporting certificates, simply a willingness to share your ideas, innovations and imagination with the Arusha community, and be open to learn and develop from your experiences here in Tanzania. We have a team of qualified teachers and sports coaches who are eager to support you throughout the duration of your stay.

We welcome anyone who has a passion for sport to join our our team. Don’t worry, you do not have to be a qualified coach, in fact some of our volunteers have never taught sports before, all we require is that people be eager to assist our established coaches.
Rugby
The main project focus is assisting the Arusha Rugby Development Programe, providing local schools and communities with rugby coaching, kits, and full support. We arrange rugby tournaments for Under 12s, right the way up to adults. At present, rugby is a developing sport in Tanzania, and it is our aim to build a team that can compete on an international level. Already four of our students have represented Tanzania in the U19 7-a-side tournament in Kenya. Our students have great potential, and with a little help from you, they can go a long way.
Other Sports
There are also opportunities to coach cricket, swimming, football, netball, athletics and a whole range of other sports.

Through various partners you can help to offer local business start ups job support and training. The projects range from selling second hand clothes (mitumbas in Kiswahili), to crafts and painting with a local artist, or more practical work such as carpentry and plumbing.
Volunteers are welcome to submit any ideas regarding micro-finance projects to the finance committee, and providing they are feasible we will support you all the way. Otherwise you can just hang out, learn how to make local jewelry and bead works, play traditional music, assist with the daily household chores or teach practical English.

All volunteers on the Arusha project will stay with host families. All families have been assessed for suitablility and at least one member of the family speaks English. You will be provided with your own room but you will need to share the other facilities.

Arusha is a great place to hang out with many restaurants, coffee shops and bars. For the bargain hunters among you there are huge "mitumba" markets selling second hand items from accross the globe.
Along with our partner organisations we can also offer a range of safari options across East Africa, including photographic and adventure safaris, mountain climbs, island hopping, as well as yoga, massage and health nutrition workshops and courses.
Host families will provide volunteers with breakfast and dinner daily during the week and three meals at weekends. Typical dishes include meat with rice, chappatis or potatoes. Special dietry requirements can be catered for, just let us know your needs when you submit your application
One of the most popular fast food dishes is chipsi mayai a Spanish-style omelette with chips replacing the boiled potatoes served with meat kebabs. Arusha also has a good variety of international restuarants.

The easiest way to get here is to fly to Mt Kilimanjaro airport. From here it is just a 45 minute shuttle bus into Arusha.
