Volunteering in Peru Drenched in Inca history Peru is best known for being the home of the awesome Machu Picchu. Nestled in the Andes, between the parched coastal desert and the lush expanse of the Amazon rainforest, Peru offers such a wide range of experiences for nature lovers. Snow capped mountains, expansive lakes, colossal sand dunes, picture-perfect volcanoes and rocky Pacific outcroppings inhabited by sea lions.

This spectacular topography has also resulted in a dramatic regional diversity, and considerable inequalities in services and living standards. Health, education and law enforcement programs are unevenly distributed across Peru.

A small elite of Spanish descent controls most of the wealth and political power, while indigenous Peruvians are largely excluded from both and make up many of the millions who live in poverty. In addition Peru is sporadically effected by the El Niño phenomenon which causes widespread flooding and devastation to many parts of the country.
