Mexico Volunteer Story

Karine Daigle, 26, Canada

I always wanted to travel; I always wanted to see the World. But a girl and by herself...

When I found out about Travel to Teach it was my opportunity. They give me the chance of traveling safely and without the worries of such a trip. From the places on offer, I decided to go to Xalapa. Even before I got there, I was attracted by this picturesque city, in the center of Mexico, and not far away from the beach in Veracruz. I wanted to know this unique culture, this melodious language and those gorgeous views. The staff helped me with my journey even before I left home, they told me what I'd need, gave me advice, instructions to find my way there and many other things.

I've been in Xalapa for two months. I discovered not only a beautiful city but a very kind population. Travel to Teach offered me the real way to travel. I could not only see the city, I could feel it. I ate the local food, used the public transport, lived in a local place and talked the country language. I couldn't say a word in Spanish when I arrived here. I got Spanish class during all my stay here and now my Spanish is much better. I have to say that my teacher was really nice, I not only learned the language but she also took the time to introduce me to the local traditions and the history of the country. I also learned some good local recipes. The cooking class was my favorite!

During the week, I taught English to people of all ages. I realized that I really enjoyed it. The students learnt from me but at the same time I also learned a lot from them. During the week-end, I visited the city. There are many beautiful places around Xalapa: the beach, volcano, museum, waterfall and the local handicrafts are beautiful.

It took me a couple of weeks to adapt to the place. After the first month, I became more familiarized and could benefit more from my trip. If you'd like my advice, you have to come at least for 2 months. Travel to Teach gave me the trip of a lifetime. I will always remember and be grateful to everyone I met in Mexico!
