Volunteer Kenya | MombasaWe are no longer sending volunteers to this location. Instead we will be concentrating on our Asia and Central America projects. For more information about these please take a look at our Asia and Central America project pages.

Known for it's spectacular white, sandy beaches and clear Indian Ocean waters Mombasa attracts many holiday maker to it's outlying beach resorts. Inside the city there is still a small town feel as the streets are lined with small wooden huts with traders selling their wares. Originally a Swahili tribe town, Mombasa was conquered by three successive colonial powers all leaving their imprints on the modern day city.
A short ferry ride from the city are the villages where our volunteers will be based. Small rural communities line the red dust streets and children of all ages pour into the community schools.

Volunteers at our Mombasa project will be based in small villages on the south coast. Schools here are desperatley trying to provide a comprehensive education for all of their students but are hindered by a lack of resources. Classes of between 60 and 80 students are the norm so our volunteers can do a huge amount to help by contributing to the teaching workforce.

Mombasa volunteers will be staying with host families in villages outside of the city. Accommodation is very rudimentary as many of the villagers live in basic houses constructed out of mud bricks and wood. Electricity is not always available and the bathroom facilities are typically long drop toilets and basin showers.

Volunteers have weekends free and there are a huge host of activities to take part in. Mombasa itself is renowned for it's beaches, water sports and nightlife. Should you wish to explore some more of Kenya Mombasa has an excellent bus network and many places are easily accessible. You may also like to visit our conservation sanctuary which is only three hours away.
Volunteers will be provided with food from their host families. A range of local dishes will be prepared and special dietry needs can be catered for on request.

All volunteers are requested to fly into Mombasa (MOI) airport. Many international flights land at Nairobi so volunteers will need to purchase a connecting flight ticket from Kenya Airways.
90 Day tourist visas can be purchased on arrival at Nairobi airport for $50USD. It is possible to extend your visa by an additional 90 days by visiting the immigration office in Nairobi.
If you are planning to work in Cambodia then you will need to obtain a police records background check before starting your placement. For details on the application procedure in your home country please take a look at: www.travel-to-teach.org/CRB-information.php
At all other locations you will be required to abide by the Travel to Teach Child Protection Policy.
Please seek advice from your doctor on what vaccinations you need. You can also visit the WHO's (World Health Organization) travelers health information site regarding the risk of Malaria or other illnesses in Kenya . Please note that if you are travelling onwards from Kenya to another developing country you will need to provide a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate.
One of the conditions of entry onto our programs is that volunteers have travel insurance. Most importantly the insurance needs to include medical treatment and repatriation in case of unforeseen accidents or illnesses. Volunteers should purchase insurance independently and bring a copy of their insurance certificate with them for their local co-ordinator to check before starting their program. Read our terms and conditions.
