Lisa, Sweden:
"I was in Ecuador a total of four months, took Spanish classes for one and worked for three. It was the four best months of my life, but also the four toughest...."

I have spent the past 12 weeks in Ecuador as a part of the Travel to Teach program. The program has more than met my expectations, from my first night here when I was picked up late at night from the airport and welcomed with open arms.
During my time here I've had the opportunity to learn about the Ecuadorian culture and the Spanish language. Thinking back on my first days in Ecuador I understood only a little and spoke nothing other than basic Spanish, but now I am able to hold a conversation.
As for teaching experience, I enjoyed my time in the local schools though it was trying at times. I would say being unaccustomed to working with children it was difficult to get used to the accompanying noise and chaos of the classroom.
In many schools on the coast they are short of teachers, making the student to teacher ratio high. What I never failed to encounter was caring teachers and loving students who where always happy to see me. Throughout Ecuador I found an endless spirit of generosity and willingness to help a stranger. I can't count how many times I've asked for help and been guided by a kind hearted Ecuadorian. Friends can be found on a short bus ride, in the rain forest, or on the street corner. All you have to do is smile and you will be greeted with the same courtesy.
Personally, I believe what made my time in Ecuador so special was this characteristic of Ecuadorian's. It was exemplified in my host family where they treated me as a part of the family. I don't believe I could have asked for a better family experience.
I would like to thank Travel to teach for giving me this opportunity to experience and learn in Ecuador. Also the program coordinator who I have lived with for 12 weeks, was wonderful. I couldn't have asked for a better host family. Liz is a caring, wonderful woman who takes in volunteers and without fail treats each one as a part of the family and works to make them feel as though they have a home away from home.
From Ecuador I will take fond memories of teaching traveling and most of all my family.
