Cambodia Volunteer Photo Lisa, US:
"After hearing that volunteers were needed for the Cambodia program, I happily signed on to go. I had always wanted to go to Cambodia and this was a great chance to volunteer and to get to see the country. I said my goodbyes to my students and friends in Nong Khai and headed to Kampot, Cambodia..."

Project Duration and Arrival Dates

For the majority of our programs, you can join us for any amount of time from a week to six months. However, some projects have a minimum commitment period.

We do recommend a trip of three to six months since it offers the best value. Regardless of the length of your stay, you will be able to learn some Khmer and you will have time to get to know a new culture, come to know its people, and form relationships that will outlast the duration of your stay.

Dates of arrival: All teaching will start on the Monday after the introduction.

Getting Here

Travel to Teach will advise and support you with all your travel arrangements. Our FAQ page has some information and links that can be useful when looking for transportation to and within Cambodia. Purchase your ticket and confirm your date and time of arrival with Travel to Teach. We will then make arrangements for a representative to meet you.

Reception

We will meet volunteers arriving by air at the Phnom Penh airport. Volunteers arriving by land must make your own way to the dorm. Travel to Teach staff will spend the first few days together in Phnom Penh helping you to get acquainted with the projects. We will show you around the town and introduce you to Khmer culture and language. We will prepare your placement for you, going through material with you, discussing lesson plans and suggesting teaching techniques.

Food

Our volunteers pay for their food. Often when we teach in schools we are invited to share the school lunch with our fellow teachers. Apart from that participants are responsible for their meals.

Volunteer Work

You will both assist and lead your own classroom from 8-5 weekdays with a 2 hour lunch break. Weekends are free and free time for short trips can normally be arranged. There are a variety of aspects of Seametrey in which you can take part which include teaching English and a variety of other skills and curriculum subjects, administration, IT/website design, and construction.

Living and Accommodation

T2T volunteers stay in a lovely wooden flat above the school. The flat is equipped with fans, mosquito nets, a western style bathroom, and cable television. There are two shared bedrooms and a common living area.

Vaccinations

Courses or boosters usually advised: hepatitis A, typhoid; diphtheria; tetanus.

Vaccines sometimes advised: Japanese B encephalitis, rabies, tuberculosis, hepatitis B.

Malaria: You cannot be vaccinated against malaria. Malaria precautions are advised in all areas, except Phnom Penh, the Mekong river delta and in the rice growing areas around the large inland lake of Tonle Sap. Avoid mosquito bites by covering up with clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers especially after sunset, using insect repellants on exposed skin, and sleeping under a mosquito net (nets will be provided by Travel to Teach)

Insurance

Please purchase health and travel insurance independently. You need health insurance that will cover medical treatment and repatriation in case of accident or illness.

Visas

Upon entry visitors can purchase a tourist visa ($20) or a business visa ($25) for month. Business visas can be extended in Phnom Penh for 3, 6 or 12 month stays.

Certification

You will get a Travel to Teach certificate stating the time and place you have been teaching.
