Volunteer Gianyar

Travel to Teach's Bali volunteer programs are located just outside of the small city of Gianyar, which is the capital of Gianyar province. Although Gianyar province receives much of its money income from tourism and contains many of Bali's most popular locations the city of Gianyar itself feels very far removed from any tourist influence, making it an ideal place for volunteers to discover the real Bali. If you are walking through the city it can feel almost as if time has stopped with everything happening at a slower and more relaxed pace. Almost daily you'll find vibrant Hindu ceremonies and festivals in the streets and the city is surrounded by amazing beaches and huge and beautiful rice terraces with a backdrop of mountains and volcanoes.

The Travel to Teach dorm is located in the village of Medahan, around 3 kilometers outside of Gianyar city center. The famous artisan village of Ubud is only a 10 minute drive away, with Keramas beach around 15 minutes away whilst the main tourist district of Kuta and the Balinese capital Denpasar are only a short bemo ride away. Gianyar city contains all them main facilities you'd expect from city such as food markets, supermarkets, ATM's, internet cafes, laundry places and pharmacies.

Prices are available for any period between 2 weeks and 6 months.

Travel to Teach's volunteer house is located in a small village around 3 km from the center of Gianyar. Facilities in the house are quite basic, with only cold water and an Asian style squat toilet although the views from the rooftop balcony are beautiful. The dorm has 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, living with TV and a DVD player.

Volunteers will stay in the Panti Asuhan Kristen Orphanage. There are spare rooms on the top floor of the four story building. Facilities at the Orphanage are quite basic, with bunked beds, a cold water shower and an western squat toilet although the view from the porch in front of the rooms offers an amazing view over the coast of Bali and the nearby Island of Nusa Lembongan and to the other side to the Gunung Agung, Bali’s highest Volcanoe.

The stay in the Orphanage includes breakfast and there is a kitchen with basic facilities that can be used to cook and store food. The city centre is within walking distance of the orphanage and there are plenty of markets, restaurants, and food stalls. There are no western restaurants in Klung Kung but there are some in Padangbai which is just a short drive away.

Bali has two seasons, dry and wet, although temperatures remain consistently hot, averaging around 31°C throughout the year. The wet season runs from October to April with most of the rain coming between December and February. Rain is not uncommon outside of the wet season, although most of it comes at night or in the very early morning.

Arriving by Air:

A number of international airlines fly either directly to Bali, or via Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar or Singapore. These include Singapore Airlines, Quantas, Air France, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific. The Singapore based airline Air Asia also fly cheaply to Bali from Kuala Lumpar and Singapore. There are a number of Indonesian based budget carriers, although some of these have less that impressive safety records so are probably best avoided.

Volunteers will be met at the international airport in Denpasar.

Henning

Henning is originally from Germany and have been living in Indonesia since 2007. Before his time in Bali he used to be an IT-Consultant. He volunteered for Travel to Teach in Nongkhai in mid 2007. In Bali he is our Project Coordinator and the main contact person for volunteers. In his spare time he enjoys the great surf that Bali has to offer.

Volunteers must obtain a Sosial Budaya Visa prior to their arrival into Bali. To apply for this Visa you’ll need a sponsor letter that our partnership foundation in Bali can provide. To organise this you will need to scan and email us a colour photocopy of your passport.

The cost for the visa varies for different countries, but it will be around US$45, and must be paid by the volunteer. This Visa is valid for 60 Days and is extendable. After the first 60 days it can be extended monthly, each visa extension costs around US$60. In total you’ll be able to stay up to six month in Indonesia. If you wish to stay longer than six months in Indonesia you need to leave the country and purchase another Sosial Budaya Visa. Please check with your closest embassy or consulate for processing times and what kind of documents you need to apply for the visa initially.

NOTE: Please make sure at the Embassy, that the name of the sponsor appears on the Visa, otherwise you’ll have nothing more than a 60 Days tourist Visa. Once you have received your Visa you have to enter Indonesia within 90 Days of the issuing date.

Courses or boosters usually advised: hepatitis A and B, typhoid; tetanus-diptheria.

Vaccines sometimes advised:Japanese B encephalitis (if visiting rural farming areas), rabies, malaria.

There are no required vaccinations needed to enter the country but please consult your doctor before traveling. More information is available from the WHO's (World Health Organization) travelers health information site or CDC.gov traveler’s health information.

One of the conditions of entry onto our programs is that volunteers have travel insurance. Most importantly the insurance needs to include medical treatment and repatriation in case of unforeseen accidents or illnesses. Volunteers should purchase insurance independently and bring a copy of their insurance certificate with them for their local co-ordinator to check before starting their program. Read our terms and conditions.

You will get a Travel to Teach certificate stating the time and place you have been teaching.

All volunteers are required to read and agree to our terms and conditions before being accepted onto one our programs.
